Update: see below*.

SBS 18dec'07 22:00 Crude Impact 23:45

Crude Impact exposes our deep-rooted dependency on the availability of fossil fuel energy and examines the future implications of peak oil, i.e. the point in time when the amount of petroleum available worldwide begins a steady, inexorable decline. It looks at the role of the media in keeping the people in developed countries unaware of the climate changes affecting the world today. Thanks to mankind's rapid growth, fuelled by fossil fuels and other minerals, we are warming the earth. As heat increases, the energy in the atmosphere increases causing more storms, hurricanes, droughts and other severe weather conditions. (From Australia, in English) (Documentary Series) (Rpt) PG (A) CC

In plain text: get sustainable, or get dead.

*Update: the descriptor "From Australia" is probably an error; see this website.

I watched the film "Crude Impact" after a 'tip-off' from a friend; it was preceded by another so-called documentary "Energy War." In my opinion the earlier piece is utter garbage, containing as it does almost unbelievable levels of filthy, pro-US propaganda. Boo! Hiss! If SBS is gunna broadcast such bilge, it could at least do so with a proper warning.

G'day Anonymous [22/12/07 10:51],

and thanks for the kind words.

A few words in haste following the "pro-US propaganda" theme, as it relates to SBS.

I've previously said "Worst of course are the public broadcasters AusBC and SBS, that they retail some'a the same lies as the 'private' MSM is a true scandal: SHAME!"

And I refer to this 'snip:'

«However, retired CIA agent John Kiriakou says that the decision to waterboard terror suspects was made at the White House with the agreement of the National Security Council and Department of Justice.
Mr Kiriakou said the method broke the resistance of Abu Zubaydah, one of the two Al-Qaeda suspects said to have featured in the CIA tapes, in about 30 seconds.
"I have no doubt that the information gleaned from Abu Zubaydah stopped terror attacks and saved lives," he told CNN news, while querying whether waterboarding was compatible with US values.»

[SBS/CIA chief knew about interrogation tapes]

Like all 'good' propaganda, this contains a grain of (possible) truth, namely that info gained from torture could'a saved the life of some person or persons unknown. However, it falls into the same class as the 'ticking bomb' scenario beloved of Hollywood 'B' grade entertainment; one could conclude that this 'simple' message is actually the purpose of the piece. The sheople® can sigh; it's all OK, then: go ahead and torture the (terrorist/Islamofascist) buggers!

The story is getting a re-run, see here at TPMR:

«What's more, Kiriakou's former employer, the CIA -- which surely wasn't happy about seeing Kiriakou confirm on TV that his team waterboarded Abu Zubaydah and then call waterboarding torture -- won't confirm that it dimed him out.»

Long story short (for Kiriakou): "Shoot the messenger!"

Getting back to SBS; what is its responsibility? To inform, one might'a thunk. Are we being properly informed by the statement "that the information gleaned from Abu Zubaydah stopped terror attacks and saved lives?" That would depend on the veracity of the statement. Proof please, Kiriakou/SBS.

Here is an opinion from the comments at crooksandliars:

«2 jr Says:
frog march that faker. He catapulted the Clear Channel “torture makes us safe!” propaganda»

This accords with my feelings on hearing the SBS piece: "S**t! How dare they?"

My own 'long story short:' I am an amateur seeker of truth; I required no more than a few microsecs' to digest the statement and react: "Filthy propaganda!"

SBS are supposed professionals, taking our (aka taxpayers') dough.

Facit: Torture was made illegal for a purpose. The current US regime has returned us to the past; in the case of illegal invasions to 1939, in the case of torture to the Inquisition. Etc. SBS should include a warning, at the very least:

"Warning: the following SBS 'news' item is sourced from the USA, and may contain filthy, lying propaganda."

-=*end*=-

PS Here's a further comment from crooksandliars:

«17 Joe O. Says:
   ralph @ 15:

what valuable intelligence? I can say a dog turd smells like a rose. Doesn’t make it true.

Agreed. Kiriakou said that “waterboarding” was used but was it? If he didn’t actually witness it and was simply told that waterboarding was used on the suspect then how can anyone be sure? This whole thing is beginning to stink to high heaven. There is something here that just doesn’t fit and it sounds to me like they are trying to cover something more sinister than waterboarding.»

That "something more sinister" is murder for oil; 1mio+ killed since '03.
